"L.A. Officials push for new focus on school safety after Parkland"
By Howard Blume
This article is about L.A political leaders, and L.A school board members. They are planning to focus on how to prevent further school violence.
Today Mike Feuer will be looking at possible ways to ensure safety at schools. He states that every school district should be doing their best to keep their schools safe in every way they can. L.A. City Controller Laura Chick said that she was hopeful for the idea to make L.A. a role model for the entire nation. She said, "This is an effort to take in information from both experts and from boots on the ground - people who are living and breathing daily the concerns about school safety."
President Trump suggested training teachers and arming them along with other adults working at the schools. This was an idea brought from the National Rifle Assn. Feuer disagreed with the idea of arming the teachers and having them armed. The L.A. city council member said "There are too many guns too easily accessible to the wrong people. A teacher's mission in life is to instruct rather than to fire weapons in a classroom."
This was a debate held in Florida Legislature. This happened over the weekend in late February.
This event happened because school safety has been an issue for awhile now, and there's been violence from even students at schools and there have been tons of injuries and killings of other students. Violence shouldn't be taking place at schools, and students should not be having weapons with them at school. The schools aren't keeping track of their students and what they carry with them into the building, nor do the staffs notice any strange behavior. This gives the students the opportunity to take action of violence without the teachers even expecting it.
My opinion on this is it's great that people have come together during that meeting and discussed school safety. It's been a big issue lately so I'm glad that the meeting was up-to-date and the idea of training the teachers and arming them was interesting. I agree with Feuer on the fact that arming the teachers is too much, but I think that they should at least be trained so that they can do something in this kind of situation.
